I think most of you know by now that I am a Christian and my faith has been a huge part of my own journey to health. I believe a healthy diet and good nutrition are essential for good health. But my own personal journey to health has always centered around Jesus because ultimately He is my healer.

So I decided I really wanted to share a part of my story that may hopefully encourage someone who may feel discouraged or hopeless in their own journey to health.

About 16 years ago I was in so much chronic pain I had to quit my job. Doctors had no answers. But I made a decision and said “I’m not going to live like this”. I made a decision that day that changed my path. That was when my journey to health began.

It’s been a long road making healthy food choices when junk food can be so tempting to push down the pain, facing truth that is often very painful to face, and forgiving forgiving forgiving those who hurt me. But God has so greatly honored my obedience and blessed me so much along the way that I wouldn’t change a thing because there is nothing better than experiencing God’s glory.

Then in 2005 my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. When he told me, I remember so clearly like it was yesterday. He said to me “don’t get what I got”. And I said with confidence, “don’t worry dad I won’t”.

Cancer is very prevalent in my family, but again I made a choice, “I’m not going to get that”. I cannot control my health 100%, but I also know God’s word has a lot to say about our thoughts and our health. And I decided a long time ago, God’s word is going to be my truth in every area of my life, including my health.

My whole point is that every thought you think and every word you speak paints the picture of your future. It’s like planting a garden. Are you going to plant weeds? Or are you going to plant roses. I’m planting roses!!

EXAMPLE

If there is a history of cancer in your family and you think “I’m going to get cancer because it runs in my family”, that thought is a signal for your body to activate that genetic predisposition. Genetics is a predisposition, not a destination.

Or if you are diagnosed with cancer and the doctor says “you have x amount of time left”. Who made him God?? Don’t receive that death sentence for yourself. Start planting so many roses that the weeds don’t stand a chance!!

THIS IS NOT JUST POSITIVE THINKING

Positive thinking will fall short if you do not believe it in your heart. My “positive thinking” is built on the truth in God’s word. I am alive and walking today only because His word is alive in me.

Here are a few verses of many that speak about our thoughts, words, and our health.

  • “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”  (Proverbs 23:7)

  • “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them”  (Mark 11:24)

  • “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”  (Proverbs 18:21)

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Dr. Caroline Leaf (Brain Nueroscientist) also has a ton of educational videos and books with scientific proof of how every thought either grows new brain cells, or destroys brain cells. She is amazing. She has a lot of youtube videos. This is one of my favorites.

If you have been labeled with a disease I am not suggesting you ignore the symptoms or diagnosis. You do want to use wisdom. But I would encourage you to remember it is just a label. If you want to get well, don’t take ownership of a disease or label someone in a white coat puts on you. Focus on health. Stop putting toxic thoughts and toxic foods into your body, and “choose life”. (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Also, keep in mind when you plant seeds, you don’t dig them back up the next day to see if they are growing. You water them. I personally water my seeds of faith with God’s word and thankfulness (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

This all takes time, discipline, and determination. But if you want to get well and enjoy life, it is worth it.

All the best to your health!
