Sugar Cravings

Let’s start with sugar. Sugar is addictive! Some say it’s equally as addictive as cocaine because it stimulates the reward center in your brain. Keep in mind, alcohol, hidden sugars, and breads, pastas, white potatoes, etc., are all sugar. Even MSG acts like sugar in your brain and will cause intense sugar cravings.

1. Increase Your Potassium – Deficiencies Cause Sugar Cravings

Potassium deficiency can actually cause sugar cravings. We need close to 4700 mg of potassium per day. If you have adrenal stress and don’t consume a diet high in potassium, you have a recipe for potassium deficiency. The max allowed potassium in a supplement form is 99 mg. You would have to consume an entire bottle every day! So you HAVE to get your potassium from your diet. i.e. 4 avocados, 7+ cups of kale, 10 bananas (which would be too much sugar), etc.

I personally get my potassium from my Hemp Seed Smoothie, kale juice, and avocados.

2. Stop Sugar Cycle – Change Your Habits

Unfortunately it doesn’t take much sugar to fire up sugar cravings. One hand full of M&Ms can cause sugar cravings that can last up to 4 days. So if candy is a weakness for you, don’t temp yourself! Keep it out of sight or our of your house completely. Make it really hard to get a hold of. Set yourself up to succeed and don’t try to be a hero.

3. Support Your Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands manage stress. If they are depleted they will cause sugar cravings for instant energy. Unfortunately you will crash from your sugar high, and end up in worse shape down the road with chronic fatigue so bad you can’t even get out of bed. It can become VERY SERIOUS.

4. Balance Gut Bacteria – Candida Will Make You Crave Sugar Intensely

This is a big topic because yeast overgrowth is a huge problem for many people. Sugar, antibiotics, and other medications destroy healthy gut bacteria allowing bad bacteria to flourish. Bad bacteria feeds off of sugar (and undigested food), which can cause intense sugar cravings.

5. Emotional Stress and Anxiety

It takes about 4 days to detox from sugar on a physical level.  If your cravings do not go away when you eliminate sugars, your cravings are very likely emotional at which point you will want to investigate the underlying root stress.

Salt Cravings

1. Support Your Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands NEED real salt (unrefined sea salt not table salt). So if you are cravings salt your adrenal glands are likely depleted.

2. Consume REAL Unrefined Sea Salt

You crave salt because you need salt, unrefined sea salt. Unrefined salt takes water (and nutrients) into the cells, prevents water retention, alkalizes, balances electrolytes, balances blood pressure, and much much more. Table salt (found in processed foods and restaurant food), will actually do the opposite. It will bloat you, cause acidity, high blood pressure, water retention, etc.

I add sea salt to my water every day to ensure I am well hydrated and my adrenal glands receive the nourishment they need. But you also need to keep in mind, salt and potassium work together. That being said, you also need to keep your potassium levels up. If salt and potassium are out of balance you can have heart palpitations, water retention, or kidney problems.

So instead of grabbing for the chips, add sea salt to your diet, increase your potassium, and nourish your adrenal glands.

Chocolate Cravings

Increase Magnesium

Chocolate cravings are usually either magnesium deficiency, or burnt out adrenal glands (discussed under sugar). Magnesium is commonly known as “the anti-stress mineral” because it is quickly depleted when we are under stress.

Hungry All The Time or Greasy Fatty Food Cravings

Liver Cleanse – Increase Bile Flow

The type of fats I’m referring to are greasy foods like burgers, fries, pizza, etc. If you are craving these types of foods, or you are hungry all the time and never satisfied, you have congested bile flow and are not digesting fats. The solution is to get your bile moving again with liver cleansing and digestive enzymes that increase bile flow. Craving Sour Foods

Cleanse Your Liver

Craving sour foods can be a fatty liver. Your body is needing more choline to break up the fats in your liver. It’s best to do a liver cleansing diet, liver flushing, and support your choline production with non synthetic B vitamins. Nutritional Yeast flakes are ideal.

Chewing Ice

If you are craving ice, this indicates iron deficiency. For this craving I would recommend seeing a doctor.
